TWEED Shire Council is calling for community feedback on a new plan to better manage the popular Hastings Point Headland.

The draft management plan is now on public exhibition and was developed in response to rising visitor numbers and growing pressure on the fragile coastal site.

It aims to protect the headland’s natural beauty, ecosystem and cultural heritage, while improving safety and access for both residents and visitors.

Council’s team leader coast and waterways Tom Alletson said the plan reflects the views of more than 300 locals.

“Hastings Point Headland is well-loved by the community and visitors, but even the most respectful visitors can have an impact,” Alletson said.

“Without thoughtful management, increased visitation could damage the values that make this area so unique.”

The draft outlines key issues such as traffic congestion and pedestrian safety and proposes actions to improve the area.

It covers the Hastings Point headland and carpark, Fig Tree Park, Cudgera Creek Park, the foreshore, and land from Peninsula Street to the creek mouth.

The plan also draws on feedback from residents, environmental groups and visitors.

Submissions close on June 27.
