Kids cash in on fishing competition
A REINVIGORATED fishing competition is set to offer juniors the chance to compete for more than $10,000 in prizes.
The Ballina RSL Club Kids Fishing Competition will be held on Monday, January 27.
It will welcome a record number of participants with up to 200 kids to showcase their fishing skills on the riverside of the RSL.
The large prize pool is courtesy of major fishing sponsors Hooked on Brewing Bait & BBQ, Shimano, Frogley’s Offshore, and Rapala.
Jay Morgan from Hooked on Brewing Bait & BBQ said it is the main junior competition his shop supports.
“It had been running for a long time and we got involved a few years ago when it looked like it might have been running out of steam,” Mr Morgan said.
“We’re lucky with the support of our suppliers, we’re able to turn a little bit into a lot.
“We probably give away more than we should, but I love seeing kids out fishing and having fun.
“Fishing is one of the best things they can do, it costs next to nothing and they can spend a day on the water with their mates.”
The event aims to strengthen community ties and encourages outdoor activities among families.
Kids also learn about conservation and respect for aquatic environments.
Registration opens at 8am on the Ballina RSL terrace at the boardwalk’s western end.
Families can choose their preferred fishing spots and prepare for a day of fun and friendly competition.
The event is designed to be inclusive, welcoming novice to experienced young anglers, promoting not only skill enhancement but also a spirit of sportsmanship among participants.
The post-event celebration will feature a complimentary sausage sizzle and poppers for kids in the Ballina RSL Auditorium.
Footwear must be worn inside the RSL with entrants to comply with NSW fishing regulations for the duration of the competition.
It is open for kids up to 16 years old with the last weigh-in on the day at 1pm.
Entry forms can be found at ballinarsl.com.au.
