MARINE Rescue Ballina is calling for its next round of recruits, with a focus on attracting radio operators to join the volunteer service.

People will have the chance to see first-hand the vital work the group does on the Richmond River and surrounding waterways at an open day at its base on Sunday, March 1.

“We’ll be doing a hard sell, and like all volunteer organisations, we’re struggling to get enough active volunteers,” boat captain Geoff Hutchinson said.

“We’ve got about 80 people on the books, but they’re not all active. If people are thinking about volunteering, don’t wait, start now and we can introduce them to the system.

“You can do as much or as little as you’re able. We desperately need radio operators, and basically anyone can do that with the right training.”

The open day will allow visitors to see the rescue boats, meet volunteers, and learn about the training provided.

Hutchinson described the work as both rewarding and vital to the safety of boaters across the Far North Coast region.

There was a recent search for a missing Gold Coast fisherman which involved a multiday search with boats in the water for 10 hours.

Another incident saw a boat roll over and wash up at Shelly Beach.

“All the training in the world matters, but it’s the teamwork and procedures that save lives,” Hutchinson said.

Volunteers work closely with other agencies, including police and Surf Life Saving, with a single point of contact coordinating the response.

Hutchinson said radio operators are critical in helping track vessels and alert authorities if something goes wrong.

“I do it because I love being on the water and if I can bring someone safely home to their family, that’s the big bonus,” he said.
