More shade trees planned for Murwillumbah CBD
TWEED Shire Council will soon plant more street trees in the Murwillumbah CBD to improve the area and provide more shade.
As part of the Cool Towns Urban Forest Program, the first planting phase will occur in May and June at four locations. It includes sites on Murwillumbah Street next to the post office, Westpac and Tursa Employment, and at the corner of Brisbane Street and Proudfoot Lane next to the IGA.
The four new street trees will provide additional shade and street cooling, with the Council to create landscaping and seating to enhance the character of the central district.
The Cool Towns program aims to increase shade and reduce urban heat in the Tweed Shire.
More than 1300 trees were planted under the scheme in urban areas of the shire last year, including along pedestrian pathways, on nature strips outside houses, and parks and public places.
Residents are encouraged to nominate locations where more street trees are needed, such as parks, walkways, pedestrian areas or streets.
They can also request that the Council plant a tree on their nature strip or outside their residence.
Requests are subject to site assessments and, if suitable, will be allocated for winter planting schedules.
The second phase of the 2025 CBD planting is subject to funding.
