MURWILLUMBAH skaters will take over the BMX track halfpipe on March 7 for Murbah Mini Ramp Madness, a community jam celebrating old-school skate culture.

The event will be held at the Murwillumbah BMX track halfpipe for the first time in 30 years.

Organiser Levi Yeaman said the jam draws inspiration from early 1980s skateboarding, when the sport was underground and community-driven.

“I wanted to create something that brings our community together and celebrates what makes Murwillumbah unique,” he said.

The night will open with a 90-minute expression session before a 30-minute Highest Air Contest, with cash and prizes on offer.

“540 airs are always a crowd pleaser,” Yeaman said.

Yeaman said moving the event to the seven-foot halfpipe reflects its focus on skateboarding’s origins.

“This event is about embracing the DIY ethos of skating’s roots and it really fits Murwillumbah’s creative, laid-back scene,” he said.

Murwillumbah has long been home to alternative subcultures, including a strong skate and graffiti scene.

Yeaman said skate spaces provide young people with an outlet for creativity and connection.

“The skate park and graffiti walls are hubs for young people to express themselves,” he said.

“Skate culture is about community and creativity here, and this upcoming event is not just about showcasing tricks but representing Murwillumbah’s alternative spirit.”

Yeaman said he continues to run lessons for local youth and hopes to foster a positive skate environment.

“It’s always been about the people and the vibe for me,” he said.

“Skating helped me to get out of my shell, and now I love helping others find their confidence on a board.”

“I hope kids see that with passion and practice they can achieve anything they set their minds to.”

Murbah Mini Ramp Madness will be held on March 7 from 6pm to 8pm at the Murwillumbah BMX track halfpipe.
