COUNCIL has started upgrading the entrance to the Murwillumbah Civic Centre to improve access to the library, auditorium and customer service centre.
The entrance sustained damage during the 2022 floods, which was made worse by later weather events.
Council says the upgrade will make the car park more resilient to future floods and ensure
access stays reliable and convenient.
Works include new durable asphalt surfacing, drainage improvements, accessible parking spaces, connecting footpaths for easier access to facilities, and improved entry and exit points onto Tumbulgum Road.
In a statement, council said the project focuses on essential infrastructure, with more improvements to come.
“We’re laying the groundwork for exciting future additions — think café-style seating, garden beds, trees and places to sit and connect,” the statement read.
During construction, the vehicle access ramp, access road, and short-term parking at the front of the Civic Centre will be closed, and pedestrian access will be redirected to temporary paths.
The accessible ramp will be closed for a short period and replaced with a pedestrian detour.
Access to the TRAC centre and multistorey car park will stay open throughout the works.
The Australian and NSW Governments jointly funded the $181,180 repairs.
Work on the upgrades has begun and is due to be completed by the end of July.
