Pegged for success
AN app developed in Byron Bay that aims to better connect businesses and customers has expanded into Ballina.
As well as an in-app terminal for transactions, the Local Pegs app allows businesses to tailor discounts to meet their needs, such as different offers and pricing for locals and tourists.
Customers can also choose to donate a portion of each transaction to local charities.
“Unlike many other platforms that may disproportionately favour a single entity and contribute to market imbalances, Local Pegs prioritises local needs and economic sustainability,” the app’s founder Adam Russell said.
Businesses using the app can also engage directly with their local community through posts, promotions and device notifications to encourage engagement and repeat business, while smaller businesses can set up and manage online stores through the platform.
The idea for Local Pegs began taking shape in 2020 when Russell started to work with friends who owned Byron Bay businesses facing challenges balancing prices for tourists and locals.
After initially developing a locals’ card, he realised that a mobile app offered more communication channels.
Local Pegs officially launched in Byron Bay in mid-2022, with 177 businesses now signed up, including Vagabond, Bayleaf, Main St Burger Bar, The Great Northern Hotel, Combi Byron and Three Blue Ducks at The Farm.
“Our initial focus has been on building strong engagement in Byron Bay, where we’ve been refining the platform, growing our network of businesses and ensuring the best possible experience for both merchants and customers,” Russell said.
“Ballina plays a key role in the Northern Rivers economy and expanding there aligns with our goal of dispersing economic activity and growth more evenly throughout the region.
“We’re also bringing businesses on board in Lennox Head, Bangalow, Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads in the future to create a more connected and thriving local economy across the greater region.”
