Politics of Life sparks debate
A PACKED crowd at M|Arts heard Griffith Review founder Julianne Shultz and author Judith White discuss how to live through political chaos at the latest Politics of Life event.
The speakers unpacked the implications of global crises, including the US election, highlighting the need for solidarity and community in turbulent times.
Professor Richard Hil told the audience that authoritarianism thrives on division and isolation.
“In these uncertain and troubling times, one way of bringing people together is by being prepared to talk with others about the things that worry us,” Hil said.
“POL is about creating a community of people prepared to discuss critical ideas and insights that help us to make sense of our individual and collective circumstances.
“We’re all impacted by global crises, which are set to worsen.
“We’ll need a greater sense of togetherness and a stronger civic society to get on top of the challenges
“The worst thing we can do is to retreat into isolationism.
“POL is about building community, gaining insights, sharing ideas and having a thoroughly enjoyable time in the company of others.”
POL committee member Maria Barbieri said the atmosphere had been lively.
“However, when the conversation on stage started, you could have heard a pin drop,” Barbieri said.
“Everyone became very focused.
“The conversation was of the highest standard in public debate.
“It is crucial to foster a strong and frank public debate on issues that affect us all, to share thoughts and feelings, and to find solutions to our collective problems.”
Local resident Lynne Kohler said she had been hesitant to attend at first.
“I’d built in an early exit plan as I was still reeling from the US election and couldn’t bear the thought of discussing politics,” Kohler said.
“But my mood lifted immediately
“The venue was packed, we were warmly welcomed.
“It seemed the whole town was there, and the vibe was electric.
“The focus of the evening was how we live our best lives during chaos, and I felt buoyed and energised.
“I’m thrilled to hear that there will be many more of these events to come.”
The Politics of Life series will continue at M|Arts with talks by prominent speakers on various subjects from February 2025.
