AN IN-CONVERSATION event at M|Arts on November 21 will explore the impacts and repercussions of the United States election.

‘The Politics of Life: This Stuff Matters’ explores the current political environment with academic, author and founder of Griffith Review Julianne Shultz in conversation with journalist, author and gallery director Judith White.

The American election may be on the other side of the globe, yet the final result will have significant consequences for the world – including Australia.

Subtitled ‘Phew or Spew? What the US election means for you, me, and everything on the planet’, the event will provide insights on living life amid chaos, confusion and uncertainty.

Ms Schultz is an academic, author and founding editor of the Australian literary and current affairs journal Griffith Review.

Her latest book, The Idea of Australia: A Search for the Soul of the Nation, goes to the very heart of what the nation has and could become.

She is professor emerita media and culture at Griffith University, is on the Sydney Writers Festival board and writes a fortnightly column for The Guardian.

She is working on a television adaptation of her book, The Idea of Australia, with Blackfella Films for broadcast on the SBS.

Tweed Shire local Judith White was born in Lancashire, England and holds two degrees from Oxford University.

She worked in left-wing publishing in London before moving to Australia in 1986.

Ms White has been the literary editor of The Sun-Herald, executive director of the Art Gallery Society of New South Wales, and is the author of three books – Art Lovers: A History of the Art Gallery Society of NSW; Culture Heist: Art vs Money; and Children of Coal: A Migrant’s Story.

Double bassist, pianist and songwriter Andrew Malynowsky, who appears regularly with Luna Junction, Sali Bracewell, Latin Goldie and the Caldera Chamber Orchestra, will perform live on the night.

Entry to the 7pm talk and question-and-answer session is via donation ($10/5 recommended), at the door or via bit.ly/thisstuffmatters
