Two people have died after a car crashed into a tree on the M1 near Chinderah on Monday evening.
Emergency services were called to the motorway near Chinderah Road about 6pm following reports of a crash.
NSW Police said officers from the Tweed-Byron Police District arrived to find the driver and front-seat passenger dead at the scene.
The vehicle left the road before striking a tree.
Two southbound lanes were closed as a crime scene was established and specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit began inquiries.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the motorway reopened in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
