CLUB Tweed will host the most elite lawn bowlers in the country with world champions and Commonwealth Games medallists among the field at the annual Golden Nugget event.

The Golden Nugget is an invitational singles event which attracts 12 of the best male and female bowlers to Tweed Heads each year.

It has been running for 38 years and will be held from July 27-31.

Club Tweed bowls coordinator Emma Boyd said the Golden Nugget is one of the most sought-after titles in lawn bowls.

“I would consider it the world’s best singles competition, and it’s been cemented in our club’s history for a very long time,” Boyd said.

“It’s a spectacle for our sport and it gives our members and people around the region a chance to see a world class field up close.

“We describe the event as the Wimbledon of lawn bowls; they dress in traditional white uniforms which adds a bit of prestige and nostalgia.”

Former Australian team members and Club Tweed bowlers Lynsey Clarke and Chloe Stewart will be part of the competition.

Australian champion Kelsey Cottrell, current world number one Kelly McKerihen and three-time Golden Nugget Natasha Van Eldik are also among a quality women’s field.

Defending champion Lee Schraner will aim to win the men’s singles for a third straight year, while former Ballina bowler Aaron Teys will return after reaching the final last year.

World singles gold medallist Ryan Bester, Australian open champion Aron Sherriff and world indoor singles champion Jack McShane will also compete.

The junior Golden Nugget will also return with 48 rising stars from Australia, China, Hong Kong and New Zealand competing.

It has long been regarded as a stepping stone for Australia’s elite young bowlers with many going on to the Jackaroos team.

Club Tweed bowler Lilly Vardy has won back-to-back Queensland titles at under-18s level and is competing in the event for the third time.

“This is one of the most exciting events to coordinate for the year, the friendship, talent and eagerness these young players have is a credit to their families and clubs,” Boyd said.
