{"id":102201,"date":"2024-10-09T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-08T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=102201"},"modified":"2024-10-03T11:29:38","modified_gmt":"2024-10-03T01:29:38","slug":"karate-students-a-cut-above","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/sport\/karate-students-a-cut-above\/","title":{"rendered":"Karate students a cut above"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SIX members of Byron Shire Shotokan Kase-Ha Karate Do and Self Defence academy are heading to Victoria for a national seminar next month.<\/p>\n<p>Chief instructor Jean Boussard said he was looking forward to the 2024 Kase-Ha Shotokan Karate National Seminar (Gasshuku) in Sale, about 200 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, from November 22 to 24.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will attend and bring along a strong team of local karatekas \u2014 four adults and a very promising Tiger (teenager),&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a unique opportunity for our dedicated karatekas to benefit from the teaching of a master in this remarkable workshop in practical self-defence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shotokan karate is a widely practiced, dynamic style of the traditional martial art that originated on the island of Okinawa in Japan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103539\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103539\" style=\"width: 564px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-103539 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/10\/JeanBoussardfromByro_07977-1-564x1024.jpeg?_t=1727918821\" alt=\"\" width=\"564\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jean Boussard from Byron Bay Shotokan Kase-Ha Karate Do and Self Defence. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There will be very challenging sessions at the seminar during these three days, physically but also emotionally and mentally, but the team is passionate and ready,&#8221; Boussard said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is realistic traditional Shotokan karate, not competition oriented but the genuine martial art.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Boussard, a former French diplomat, has been practicing karate for more than 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>He is also a 2nd Dan in Taekwon Do and has been initiated into many other martial arts, including Vietvodao (black belt), judo, aikido, kendo, nunchaku, Tai Chi, capoeira and Thai kickboxing.<\/p>\n<p>Boussard established the academy in Byron Bay in 1998 and teaches a range of classes at Moller Pavilion at Bangalow Showground several times a week.<\/p>\n<p>Each session incorporates meditation, techniques, drills and breath work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SIX members of Byron Shire Shotokan Kase-Ha Karate Do and Self Defence academy are heading to Victoria for a national seminar next month.
