{"id":102626,"date":"2024-10-27T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-26T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=102626"},"modified":"2024-10-23T21:39:25","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T10:39:25","slug":"lennox-head-surfer-named-athlete-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/sport\/lennox-head-surfer-named-athlete-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Lennox Head surfer named athlete of the year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LENNOX Head surfer has been named the North Coast Academy of Sport&#8217;s athlete of 2024 after a standout year in competition.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen-year-old Ocea Curtis received the Darrel Chapman Memorial \u2013 NCAS Athlete of the Year award and the Indigenous Athlete of the Year award.<\/p>\n<p>She represented Australia at the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships in El Salvador, where the Australian team won.<\/p>\n<p>The academy&#8217;s awards night also celebrated the achievements of athletes, coaches, and staff for their sportsmanship, leadership, and personal growth.<\/p>\n<p>Coach of the Year was awarded to Cass Notley for her leadership and development of athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie Ford and Koen Loader were recognised as Leaders of the Year, while the Chairman&#8217;s Encouragement Award went to skateboarder Ella Ledingham for her potential in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>North Coast Academy of Sport executive director D&#8217;Arcy Van den Bossch said their athletes, coaches and managers could be proud of their efforts this year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/10\/OceaCurtis1_39283.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ocea Curtis is the 2024 North Coast Academy of Sport athlete of the Year. Photo: NCAS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We celebrate not only their success in competition but their growth as leaders and individuals,&#8221; Van den Bossch said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are proud to support the North Coast&#8217;s next generation of athletes, and our programs continue to grow stronger each year. We can&#8217;t wait to meet our next sporting and community champions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stewart Brawley, Nikki Greenwood, and Peter &#8220;Cuz&#8221; Kirkwood were named life members of the academy for their contributions to sport in the North Coast region.<\/p>\n<p>Academy chairman, Dr Greg Downes, praised the recipients for their impact on local sport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The dedication of our life members has shaped the academy into what it is today.<\/p>\n<p>Their years of service, guidance, and passion have left an indelible mark on NCAS, and it is our privilege to recognise their contributions.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A LENNOX Head surfer has been named the North Coast Academy of Sport&#8217;s athlete of 2024 after a standout year in competition.
