{"id":102642,"date":"2024-10-27T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-26T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=102642"},"modified":"2024-10-24T10:50:50","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T23:50:50","slug":"new-inquest-into-simone-strobels-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/new-inquest-into-simone-strobels-death\/","title":{"rendered":"New inquest into Simone Strobel&#8217;s death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A CORONIAL inquest will investigate the death of Simone Strobel, whose body was found concealed under palm fronds near a Lismore caravan park in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second inquest into the German backpacker&#8217;s death, with the hearing set to take place at the NSW state coroners court in November, presided over by state coroner Teresa O&#8217;Sullivan.<\/p>\n<p>Strobel, a 25-year-old kindergarten teacher, was backpacking in Australia with her boyfriend Tobias Moran (nee Suckfuell) when she was last seen alive at the Lismore Tourist Caravan Park.<\/p>\n<p>Her body was discovered six days later at a bocce court less than 100 metres from the campsite.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, then-state coroner Paul McMahon ruled there was insufficient evidence to charge anyone over her death. A second inquest was scheduled for February 2021 but did not proceed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/10\/7c45ac6b72332721bcd1_20755.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"339\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Simone Strobel and her former boyfriend Tobias Moran (nee Suckfuell). Photo SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Moran was charged with murder and perverting the course of justice in July 2022, but the charges were dropped in June 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Lismore local court awarded Moran $190,000 in costs, ruling there was &#8220;no reasonable cause&#8221; for him to be charged.<\/p>\n<p>Moran will attend next month&#8217;s inquest, supported by his wife, her family from Perth, and his father from Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Katrin Suckfuell, Moran&#8217;s sister, is not expected to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Jens Martin, who testified at the 2007 inquest, will not return to Australia to give evidence. Photo SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Simone Strobel&#8217;s siblings, Christina and Alexander Strobel, will travel from Germany to attend the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Strobel said it remains difficult not knowing what happened to his sister in Lismore.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If Simone were your daughter or your sister, wouldn&#8217;t you want answers?&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses and forensic experts from both Germany and Australia are expected to appear at the inquest.<\/p>\n<p>The hearing will take place at Lidcombe in Sydney from November 11 to 15.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A CORONIAL inquest will investigate the death of Simone Strobel, whose body was found concealed under palm fronds near a Lismore caravan park in 2005.
