{"id":102681,"date":"2024-10-29T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-28T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=102681"},"modified":"2024-10-23T23:37:30","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T12:37:30","slug":"new-public-art-for-wardell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/new-public-art-for-wardell\/","title":{"rendered":"New public art for Wardell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW public artwork celebrating the unique spirit of a Ballina Shire town has brought the Wardell Bridge to life.<\/p>\n<p>During the Wonderful Wardell event in June this year, residents shared what their beloved town means to them.<\/p>\n<p>The community-identified elements reflecting the town&#8217;s cultural and natural heritage that emerged as a result inspired the large-scale mural by local artist Kate Stroud.<\/p>\n<p>The playful mural uses bold colours and joyous imagery, capturing the vibrancy of the town&#8217;s identity, incorporating symbolic imagery of fishing, bird life, water ripples, wildlife and rainbows.<\/p>\n<p>Indigenous iconography pays homage to the deep connection between the town, the river, and its people.<\/p>\n<p>As a visual communicator, artist, signwriter and large-scale muralist, Stroud also describes herself as a vision hunter. Her work is joyful, provocative, and sometimes rebellious, synonymous with the outspoken and creative spirit of the Northern Rivers region.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/10\/Wardell1_33495.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The vibrant mural brightens an otherwise ordinary thoroughfare with symbols of the town&#8217;s cultural history. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stroud&#8217;s work constantly celebrates identity and survival, and the artist is a fierce advocate for community-led development and a vibrant creative economy.<\/p>\n<p>Ballina Shire Council Manager of Strategic Planning Paula Newman said the mural was a wonderful reflection of Wardell&#8217;s vibrant community spirit and rich cultural history.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It brings together elements that are meaningful to the people who live here, and it beautifully captures the essence of this unique river town,&#8221; Newman said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Public art has the power to transform spaces, and this project is a fantastic example of how creativity can enrich our environment and strengthen our sense of place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are delighted to have worked with such a talented artist and an engaged community to bring this project to life,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Wardell mural project was delivered by Ballina Shire Council and funded by the NSW Government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW public artwork celebrating the unique spirit of a Ballina Shire town has brought the Wardell Bridge to life.
