Flamboyant local musicians the Versace Boys are excited to be releasing their debut album Get Rich or Cry Trying.<\/p>\n
Will Henderson, from Mullumbimby, and Alex Johnson, from Suffolk Park, are known for their colourful costumes \u2013 often sourced from local op shops \u2013 and entertaining song lyrics.<\/p>\n
Their tongue in cheek party songs are a mix of hip hop, jazz, R&B and soul music.<\/p>\n
The pair met at a Sticky Fingers concert in Berlin in 2019 and the first song they wrote, Gin and Cucumber, is about being hungover there.<\/p>\n
Mellow, which they wrote for local drinks company Mellows, is about chilling and living a slow life.<\/p>\n
The duo decided to form a band during a COVID lockdown in Byron Bay in 2020 and can regularly be seen performing throughout the region at venues such as Brunswick Picture House and events like the recent National Circus Festival in Mullumbimby.<\/p>\n
It’s not unknown for the pair to change costumes up to five times during a show, with their wardrobes featuring pearls, gold chains, pink fluffy platform slides, fishnet crop tops, bright sunglasses and hats from Fallen Broken Street, in Byron’s arts and industry estate.<\/p>\n
They even take turns wearing a chicken onesie when performing their song Vegan.<\/p>\n
“We are two Aussie trash bogans with a similar sense of humour and a passion for songwriting, performing, dancing and seeing how far we can push the line together,” Henderson said.<\/p>\n
“We make up a heap of our music on the spot and it’s a good gig if we make each other laugh.”<\/p>\n
Get Rich or Cry Trying, which is being released through Seattle-based label Origin Records, has 10 tracks.<\/p>\n
“It’s a mix of Remi Wolf-esque bedroom pop, COBRAH-esque electronic club bangers and extremely meme-worthy funk bangers that include a heap of social commentary,” Henderson said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
