{"id":103165,"date":"2024-11-23T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=103165"},"modified":"2024-11-20T19:53:42","modified_gmt":"2024-11-20T08:53:42","slug":"from-trash-to-treasure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/from-trash-to-treasure\/","title":{"rendered":"From trash to treasure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE winners of Ballina Salvage Shed&#8217;s Recycled Art Competition were revealed during an exhibition at the resource recovery shop on the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Ron Ford won the open award with his creation South Paw \u2013 a letterbox he made with scrap metal.<\/p>\n<p>Ivy Hickson won the under-12s category and the people&#8217;s choice award with Stitch Surf&#8217;s Up, which was made with an upcycled letterbox from the tip shop and wood from her dad&#8217;s shed and decorated with shells she&#8217;d found at the beach.<\/p>\n<p>Students from Ballina Coast High, who are regular visitors to the shop, won the 12 to 18 and group categories.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/11\/IvyHicksonwithherwin_86180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"746\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ivy Hickson with her winning entry. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Support worker Josh Gooley said it was great to see the creativity on display.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was nice that some kids were working with their grandparents to put things together,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most of the entrants came to the exhibition and it created a lot of buzz in the shop.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of people on the day were buying things to upcycle themselves \u2013 I think we sold double what we usually do.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/11\/Bumblebeewonthegroup_87582.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"804\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bumblebee won the group competition. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was good to see people getting amongst it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The two design categories for 2024 are &#8216;letterbox&#8217; and &#8216;backyard animal habitat&#8217;, which could be any structure built to accommodate animals, ranging from dog kennels and bird baths to bee or insect hotels.<\/p>\n<p>The competition had four prize categories.<\/p>\n<p>The prizes were $150 for groups of three or more people, $150 for the open award, $100 for 12- to 18-year-old entrants and $50 for under-12 entrants.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/11\/AnentryinBallinaSalv_99866.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An entry in Ballina Salvage Sheds 2024 recycled art competition.
