BYRON Bay dance teacher Angela McWhinney is bringing the rhythm and joy of African dance to local seniors with free weekly classes at the Byron Community Centre.<\/p>\n

The classes explore African rhythms and movements, tailored for all fitness levels.<\/p>\n

Each session includes a gentle warm-up, rhythmic sequences, body percussion, choreography, and a relaxing cool-down.<\/p>\n

“These classes are all about connection, rhythm, and joy,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It’s wonderful to see our seniors embracing the freedom of movement, regardless of fitness level.<\/p>\n

“African dance offers a powerful way to boost well-being and community spirit. I’m thrilled to share this experience with Byron’s senior community.”<\/p>\n

Polycentric African dance differs from other dance traditions, with the dancer’s body sectioned into separate movement areas, each moving to different rhythms within the music.<\/p>\n

It can have many health benefits, including weight loss, stress reduction, improved balance, mood and sleep quality, and cardiovascular, bone and brain health.<\/p>\n

Regular participant Noelle Lynden-Way said there were few exercise\/dance classes where she would feel comfortable.<\/p>\n

“This class allowed me to do what felt ok for me,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I also looked forward to the social interaction that participating in an ongoing group provides.”<\/p>\n

Participants can expect invigorating warm-ups, dynamic rhythmic sequences, body percussion, free expression, choreography, and a relaxing cool-down.<\/p>\n

Classes are held on Mondays at Byron Community Centre on Jonson Street, Byron Bay, and upcoming dates include November 25, December 2, 9 and 16 from 10.30 \u2013 11.30 am.<\/p>\n

Spaces are limited and bookings are essential.<\/p>\n
