{"id":103574,"date":"2024-12-13T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-12T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=103574"},"modified":"2024-12-11T18:07:11","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T07:07:11","slug":"cardboard-house-offers-solution-to-emergency-housing-after-a-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/cardboard-house-offers-solution-to-emergency-housing-after-a-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardboard house offers solution to emergency housing after a disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A TINY house made from cardboard and timber offcuts could be the solution to providing more timely and cost-effective housing to regions like the Northern Rivers following a disaster.<\/p>\n<p>A prototype of the structure was displayed at Southern Cross University to demonstrate ways to use waste cardboard and under-utilised timber materials sourced from the local area.<\/p>\n<p>Southern Cross University&#8217;s Professor Andrew Rose said it offered a quick and affordable crisis housing option that also had potential benefits for the building industry.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/12\/DSC_5095A_79243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re still trying to recover from the 2022 floods as a community. One of the biggest issues at that time was a lack of potential housing and shelter,&#8221; Professor Rose said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not only is this bio-based housing product ideal as something that relates to the circular economy, but it also provides low-cost, high-quality shelter for people who have been adversely affected by disasters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Project partners include the University of Queensland and the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, as well as eight industry partners \u2013 Hurford&#8217;s, Big River, Forestry Corporation, Weathertex, Australian Panels, Visy, Jowat and Ausco Modular.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/12\/DSC_5088A_79164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Structural building components made from cardboard and under-utilised timber materials. Photo: CATHY ADAMS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>University of Queensland&#8217;s Associate Professor Joe Gattas said the project presented a new class of structural composite product: timber-cardboard sandwich panels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the current design system, the structural components consist of cardboard, which is fully recycled or sourced as a waste product, bonded to plywood skins,&#8221; Associate Professor Gattas said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/12\/DSC_5091A_79278.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"392\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The prototype had its first test in an outdoor environment at the university, where it was open to viewing by the community, industry representatives, and flood recovery stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Their main question was about the durability of cardboard as the main structural composite.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The current configuration outperforms standard foam core structurally insulated panels by about 30 per cent for the same panel density,&#8221; Associate Professor Gattas said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/12\/DSC_5118_79291.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Associate professor Joe Gattas, the cardboard at Southern Cross University. Photo: CATHY ADAMS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Hurford from timber company Hurford&#8217;s said the project presented an exciting opportunity to add value to products usually woodchipped to make paper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everything has a use. It&#8217;s about finding the highest and best use for materials.
