BALLINA Shire Council is calling on the community to join an initiative to reduce household food waste and improve living standards across the region.<\/p>\n

The Great Unwaste is an initiative led by national not-for profit group End Food Waste Australia.<\/p>\n

It focuses on proper food storage, meal planning and creative ways to use leftovers to help create a sustainable solution to waste and pollution.<\/p>\n

The national goal is to reduce 20 per cent of household waste by 2030.<\/p>\n

Council’s resource recovery education officer Justine Rowe said it was part of its long-term sustainability plan.<\/p>\n

“We are thrilled to join The Great Unwaste and support our community to tackle the important issue of food waste,” said Justine Rowe, Council’s Resource Recovery Education Officer,” she said.<\/p>\n

“This campaign offers simple, effective behaviours that every household in Ballina Shire can easily adopt to reduce waste and save money.”<\/p>\n

The campaign kicks off on Sunday, March 16 with the six-week Unwaste Challenge.<\/p>\n

Participants will receive an email with helpful tips to reduce food waste to trial at home.<\/p>\n

Support will include a meal planning template, a spreadsheet to help track waste, and direct communication with Rowe at the council.<\/p>\n

Campaign director at End Food Waste Australia Mandy Hall said council’s play an important role in fostering change.<\/p>\n

“We’re confident Ballina’s leadership will inspire local residents to reduce food waste, without blame or shame, and make a lasting impact on their environment,” Ms Hall said.<\/p>\n
