{"id":105458,"date":"2025-03-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-10T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=105458"},"modified":"2025-03-06T16:05:55","modified_gmt":"2025-03-06T05:05:55","slug":"sopranos-style-baloneys-deli-opens-in-byron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/sopranos-style-baloneys-deli-opens-in-byron\/","title":{"rendered":"Sopranos-style Baloney&#8217;s deli opens in Byron"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LOVE of award-winning US mob drama The Sopranos inspired George McFarlane to open a New York-style Italian sandwich deli in Byron Bay.<\/p>\n<p>The 30-year-old chef, who previously worked at Italian restaurant Pixie, said the shop is loosely based on Satriale&#8217;s Pork Store, where many scenes in the show were set.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When people walk into Baloney&#8217;s, I want the place to evoke Sopranos,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I&#8217;m also a big Anthony Bourdain fan and I have a tribute photo of him at my standing espresso bar.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McFarlane hails from another popular surf town, Torquay in Victoria, and was drawn to Byron Bay by its beautiful beaches and thriving food scene.<\/p>\n<p>He and his South American partner, who made the move north in 2024, by the town&#8217;s multiculturalism.<\/p>\n<p>McFarlane has mostly worked in Italian restaurants and loves the nostalgia of sandwiches and sandwich shops.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/03\/FoodservedatBaloney_19783.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A sandwich and cannoli served at Baloney&#8217;s in Byron Bay. Photo: JOEY BAILEY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They can take on such personality and can be such a staple within a community, which is exactly what I&#8217;m looking to do with Baloney&#8217;s,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Located at the old Byron Bay Hospital site, which is now a community hub known as Byron Colab on Arkwal Country, Baloney&#8217;s offers classics such as pastrami on rye, cold cuts on focaccia and cannoli.<\/p>\n<p>McFarlane worked with Sam Mathews from Happy Hour, who had designed some of his favourite venues in the region, on the fitout.<\/p>\n<p>The shop features black and white checkered flooring and an open fridge loaded with meat and cheese, with the aforementioned standing espresso bar offering $2 shots.<\/p>\n<p>It is open from 8am to 2.30pm from Tuesday to Saturday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A LOVE of award-winning US mob drama The Sopranos inspired George McFarlane to open a New York-style Italian sandwich deli in Byron Bay.
