{"id":105779,"date":"2025-03-25T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=105779"},"modified":"2025-10-22T17:15:42","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T06:15:42","slug":"about-alone-and-away-stories-of-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/living\/about-alone-and-away-stories-of-love\/","title":{"rendered":"About, alone and away \u2013 stories of love"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOCAL poet Matt Hetherington will launch his new collection, <em>About Alone Away,<\/em> at M|Arts on April 10.<\/p>\n<p>Described by the publisher as an exploration of love, loss and self-examination, Hetherington said the collection was deeply personal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The book is dedicated to my daughter and all daughters,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about me loving women and being loved by them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Parts of it are more bitter and sour and love going wrong, but there&#8217;s plenty of joyous and celebratory stuff, which are much harder to write.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Murwillumbah poet, known for his raw and spare verse, said <em>About Alone Away<\/em> is his most accessible work yet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I decided I didn&#8217;t have enough love in my life,&#8221; Hetherington said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve never written much about the past, but I started with this book. Maybe it&#8217;s what you do when you get old.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s my first kiss, the first time I had sex, my first girlfriend, which goes back a long time, and I&#8217;ve never done anything like that before.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_109346\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109346\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-109346\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/03\/Screenshot2025-03-17_55020_tn.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"889\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-109346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Love is a central theme in Matt Hetherington&#8217;s new collection of intimate yet universal poems. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not nostalgia exactly, but when writing love poems, you&#8217;re always teetering on the brink of sentimentality, so you just try not to fall off the cliff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite poetry&#8217;s limited commercial viability, Hetherington embraces the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been lucky. I do some teaching, editing, DJing and other stuff,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t survive as a professional poet in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even the big shots of Australian poetry like Les Murray and Dorothy Porter could never survive on just poetry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In my early 20s, I knew I loved poetry and weird music and accepted that there was no money in either.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though there&#8217;s very little money in it, I&#8217;m doing something I love, which is a beautiful thing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is some smartness in there, too. It&#8217;s not just luck. You gotta learn how to live with very little money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the current cost-of-living crisis, perhaps many of us could learn a thing or two from the poets about frugality, and about the complex and enduring nature of love.<\/p>\n<p><em>About Alone Away<\/em> launches during the next Poet&#8217;s Out Loud event at M|Arts on Thursday, April 10 at 6pm.
