AFTER being postponed due to Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, the Byron Seniors Festival 2025 Showcase has been rescheduled to tonight.<\/p>\n

Titled ‘Time to Shine’, the event will be held at Byron Theatre from 5pm to 7pm, with all previously purchased tickets valid and extra tickets available for $10.<\/p>\n

The event will include live music by Cass Eager, a dramatic performance by Studio 55, singing by The Brunch Choir, and hula dancing from Byron Bay Hula\/Mana Aloha Troupe.<\/p>\n

One of the highlights will be a high-energy African dance performance led by local dance teacher Angela McWhinney.<\/p>\n

A passionate advocate for movement at any age, McWhinney first connected with the seniors while volunteering on reception at the Byron Community Centre when she was enticed by the music of the Elder Beats drumming circle.<\/p>\n

“African dance has been a passion of mine since my early years as a dancer so I couldn’t resist taking to the floor and dancing,” she said.<\/p>\n

When the seniors asked her to teach them to dance, she jumped at the chance. She now leads regular classes and delivers adapted African dance programs in local aged care centres.<\/p>\n

McWhinney said seniors were an important group whose wisdom and wellness needed to be nurtured while having fun interactions, and she loved seeing them gain confidence to perform together.<\/p>\n

“The last Byron Seniors Festival was very well attended and gave people a sense of belonging and inclusion as well as inspiration and creative expression, empowerment and social cohesion,” she said.<\/p>\n

“The joy felt through the music and dance is so uplifting and energising, people are radiating with endorphins and all the feel-good vibes.”<\/p>\n
