{"id":106696,"date":"2025-05-02T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=106696"},"modified":"2025-04-30T17:14:17","modified_gmt":"2025-04-30T07:14:17","slug":"byron-ballet-returns-with-a-new-take-on-sleeping-beauty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/living\/byron-ballet-returns-with-a-new-take-on-sleeping-beauty\/","title":{"rendered":"Byron Ballet returns with a new take on Sleeping Beauty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BYRON Ballet Company returns with its annual season in a reimagining of the classic tale, Sleeping Beauty.<\/p>\n<p>In the traditional story, Princess Aurora is doomed to die after the powerful Maleficent casts a vengeful spell while the Wisdom Fairy comes to the rescue and softens the curse to a 100-year sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking from the company&#8217;s Myocum rehearsal studio, artistic director and choreographer Yvonne Hall said the Byron original version brings new life to the timeless ballet by exploring the evil fairy&#8217;s motives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was inspired by the film Maleficent, which I found really moving, and I was excited to find the most exquisite music by Ravel and Dvorak, which worked well alongside Tchaikovsky&#8217;s original score,&#8221; Hall said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of course, Maleficent still bursts into the christening with her revenge, as in the traditional story,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But in this, she even looks different \u2013 she is more beautiful, and she eventually softens, becoming a more accepting and forgiving character.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/05\/ballet2_71189.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amani Wiriyanjara, Yvonne Hall, Mia Leishman and Nes Lebovits. Photo: DAVID COPE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company works with contracted soloists from around the country, and four visiting principal male dancers will perform in Sleeping Beauty&#8217;s 35-strong cast.<\/p>\n<p>A few local rising stars are in the production.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Amani Wiriyanjara is in year 12, and watching her progress has been amazing,&#8221; Hall said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They go from being little angels on to the corps de ballet and then dancing with three people, then two, then a soloist, and then finally doing principal roles. It&#8217;s been very rewarding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mia Leishman is also an exciting young dancer. She completed years 11 and 12 while studying dance full-time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She is studying overseas now but is back having a break and visiting her family, so we&#8217;re lucky that she happened to be here.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re very well-adjusted girls.
