{"id":106798,"date":"2025-05-05T11:23:18","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T01:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/gold-coast-pro-begins\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T11:27:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T01:27:11","slug":"gold-coast-pro-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/sport\/gold-coast-pro-begins\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Coast Pro begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Gold Coast Pro got off to a hot start over the weekend, with the world\u2019s best putting their best surfing on display at Burleigh Heads.<\/p>\n<p>Both the Opening Rounds and Elimination Rounds have been completed, with the first competitors knocked out of the draw.<\/p>\n<p>Event wildcard Julian Wilson wound back the clock to defeat Morgan Cibilic and eliminate this year&#8217;s Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach champion Jack Robinson from the event.<\/p>\n<p>In a slow heat for waves, Wilson took any opportunity he could get, launching a massive air reverse to post an 8.17 out of a possible 10 points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like in that heat I was coming up against two of the in-form surfers from Bells,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are the heats you want, but damn they\u2019re hard, so I was really happy to come out on top with that one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m loving it, to be honest. It felt nice to land three from three then and throw in some variation with a grab. I was pretty amped up after that. It\u2019s nice to be here again and feel at home in this very uncomfortable environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/05\/MorganCibilic_25Gold_23010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Morgan Cibilic is also through to the Round of 32.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the women\u2019s side of the draw, Lakey Peterson was a standout from the Elimination Round.<\/p>\n<p>Peterson carried her momentum through from a fifth place at Bells Beach by defeating Bella Kenworthy and Brisa Hennessy.<\/p>\n<p>Her sharp turns were a top match for the quick cupped out walls on offer at Burleigh Heads.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/05\/LakeyPeterson_25Gold_23044.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lakey Peterson was a standout in the women&#8217;s Elimination Round on Sunday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is actually my first time surfing at Burleigh, so it felt good to get some more time out there and get to know the bank,&#8221; Peterson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt good to open up out there and feel like I was clicking in out there.
