{"id":106955,"date":"2025-05-15T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-15T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=106955"},"modified":"2025-05-15T14:07:38","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T04:07:38","slug":"an-evening-without-kate-bush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/living\/an-evening-without-kate-bush\/","title":{"rendered":"An Evening Without Kate Bush"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CABARET artist Sarah-Louise Young is bringing her internationally critically acclaimed cult show to the Northern Rivers on Saturday, May 17.<\/p>\n<p>An homage to one of the most influential voices in pop music, the show embraces the fans of Kate Bush&#8217;s music and incorporates their memories.<\/p>\n<p>Based in Manchester, England, where the Olivier Award-winner lives with her husband and children, Young is in her fourth month of a four-month Australia\/New Zealand tour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a long stretch, and I&#8217;ve been missing my family very much,&#8221; she said in a chat with this masthead on the cusp of the last leg.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But it&#8217;s been amazing &#8211; this is my seventh trip here, and I&#8217;ve had a great relationship with this country since the 2010 Adelaide Cabaret Festival.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Young began working on the show with co-creator Russell Lucas in 2013.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/05\/kate3_75912.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An Evening Without Kate Bush is an interactive show that intertwines audience storieswith the performance. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What inspired us was that she hadn&#8217;t appeared live for 35 years, and we were interested in how the fans engaged with each other,&#8221; Young said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then she announced this big comeback in 2014 with 22 dates at the Hammersmith Apollo, so we shelved it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the idea continued to resurface, and after a few years, the duo felt that the right time to revisit the concept had arrived.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It took a couple of years because it required a lot of devising as it&#8217;s so interactive and relevant to the audience,&#8221; Young said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No two shows are ever the same. It has a structure, but it has very much to do with who comes that night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The show wraps its arms around them, and I don&#8217;t know the stories that people will bring until I get into the room.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;ll hear the songs you love like <em>Wuthering Heights, Running Up That Hill, Babooshka <\/em>and<em> The Man With The Child In His Eyes,<\/em> but we attach each song to a different experience,&#8221; Young said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/05\/kate4_76032.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarah-Louusie Young is breathtaking in An Evening Without Kate Bush. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Deliberately made in the spirit of the &#8216;poor theatre&#8217; tradition, Young&#8217;s one-woman show is intimate, raw, and unaccompanied.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s one of those shows that is more complicated than it looks &#8211; very simple in its staging but quite intricate in its preparation,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many people have her songs for their funeral or that have helped them through addiction.
