{"id":107025,"date":"2025-05-17T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=107025"},"modified":"2025-05-14T20:37:45","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T10:37:45","slug":"stories-from-the-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/stories-from-the-street\/","title":{"rendered":"Stories from the street"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BALLINA local Steven Harris has spent decades living rough, hitchhiking between towns and sleeping in bush camps far from sight.<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and complex PTSD in the 1980s, Harris spent much of his adult life seeking solitude in remote bushland, including two years in a makeshift camp near Ballina that was twice hit by flood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When they shut down the rubbish tip, all of the vermin left the tip and came into the bushland,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rats, red-bellied snakes &#8211; it just destroyed the ecology.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There used to be echidnas running through there, green tree snakes \u2013 they&#8217;ve all gone now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Throughout his life, art has served as an escape and a means of self-expression during a turbulent childhood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had a terrible stutter, terrible epilepsy, and it seemed as though I had everything against me as a child,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/05\/street-RobertaandSte_56199.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Connecting Home Program Worker Roberta with Steven Harris. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I could escape anywhere on Earth with a piece of paper and a pencil.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The floods of 2022 led Harris to seek help at Mary&#8217;s Place, which referred him to Social Futures and connected him to Homes NSW, Open Minds for counselling, and other services.<\/p>\n<p>He has now been in secure housing for eight months, supported by his Connecting Home case worker Roberta and a network of local services.<\/p>\n<p>With a roof over his head and a space to paint, Harris is preparing for an exhibition that will explore themes of homelessness and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Support is what&#8217;s keeping me here,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s almost like you have a family to look after you.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BALLINA local Steven Harris has spent decades living rough, hitchhiking between towns and sleeping in bush camps far from sight.
