{"id":107450,"date":"2025-06-01T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-31T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=107450"},"modified":"2025-05-28T22:19:58","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T12:19:58","slug":"community-engagement-helps-shape-new-skatepark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/community-engagement-helps-shape-new-skatepark\/","title":{"rendered":"Community engagement helps shape new skatepark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LISMORE&#8217;S new $3.9 million skatepark is on track for completion in August, with key community groups recently given a first look at the site.<\/p>\n<p>Lismore City Council held two consultation sessions to showcase the project&#8217;s progress, inviting local businesses and potential users to see how the two-year development is shaping up.<\/p>\n<p>Council representatives were joined by police officers from the Richmond District and skatepark and youth space design firm CONVIC, which has overseen the project&#8217;s construction.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The attendees have been actively engaged throughout the design and construction process, ensuring their input is heard and reflected in every detail of the park,&#8221; a council spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The park&#8217;s design revolves around 2,300 square metres of world-class skate facilities, including seating pods, shaded areas, CCTV monitoring and safety lighting that turns off in a staged approach at 10 pm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Its advanced drainage system, featuring a 400mm ballast rock layer, enables water to drain away into surrounding catchments instead of pooling.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/06\/499630870_1087312940_44509.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new facility has been designed with input from local kids and skateboarding businesses. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The skatepark will also feature a bouldering wall structure for climbing enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>Funded by the state government, the park has been earmarked for national skateboarding and competition events and could serve as a training base for Australian and international athletes ahead of the Brisbane Olympic Games in 2032.<\/p>\n<p>Local skaters and the Mini Skateboarders Northern Rivers have been involved since the consultation process to help ensure the facility is fit for purpose.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will be a game-changer for our young people who will no longer have to travel to Goonellabah to have a skate,&#8221; mayor Steve Krieg said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will also be built to such a high standard that we can host national and international competitions, adding to Lismore&#8217;s already strong reputation for having the best sporting facilities in regional NSW.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LISMORE&#8217;S new $3.9 million skatepark is on track for completion in August, with key community groups recently given a first look at the site.
