A NEW hiking trail has opened in the region as part of the state government’s ‘Find Your Path on a NSW Great Walk’ campaign.<\/p>\n

The Gidjuum Gulganyi (Old People’s Track) four-day walk links Mount Jerusalem and Nightcap National Parks in the Tweed Byron Hinterland.<\/p>\n

Set on the lands of the Widjabul Wia-bal and Minjungbal people of the Bundjalung Nation, the 42 km trail is composed mainly of grade four tracks and features rainforests, freshwater swimming holes, waterfalls, and ancient landscapes.<\/p>\n

The hike landscape has been shaped by millions of years of volcanic activity and trails the rim of the caldera through Gondwanan rainforest, ending at the Minyon Falls.<\/p>\n

Minister for the Environment Penny Sharpe said national parks played a vital role in the NSW visitor economy, supporting regional businesses and jobs and providing access to the state’s natural wonders.<\/p>\n

“By promoting these fantastic NSW Great Walks, we are encouraging people to find their path and explore our regions in new and adventurous ways,” Sharpe said.<\/p>\n

The campaign features 275 km of walking tracks in regional NSW that have been opened within the last two years.<\/p>\n

Almost 10 million international and domestic travellers visited a national or state park in 2024 and spent more than $11.7 billion.<\/p>\n

Minister for Tourism and Jobs Steve Kamper said NSW was home to the most diverse national parks on the planet.<\/p>\n

“The ‘Find Your Path on a NSW Great Walk’ campaign will ensure they become bucket-list visitor experiences,” Kamper said.<\/p>\n

“Traversing our state’s spectacular unspoilt beaches, ancient rainforests and majestic mountain peaks, these walks have opened within the last two years and are truly spectacular.<\/p>\n

“NSW national parks not only provide authentic connections with the state’s culture and stunning landscapes, they also support thousands of jobs and contribute millions of dollars in visitor expenditure to regional NSW.”<\/p>\n

The trail suits experienced hikers and aspiring entry-level walkers, offering self-guided and guided options, as well as camping and accommodation choices for overnight stays.<\/p>\n
