LOCAL volunteer group Uki RiverCare is inviting the community to join in its first community planting day on June 22.<\/p>\n

With the goal of planting 600 trees, shrubs, and groundcovers, the volunteer project is a partnership between Tweed Landcare and Tweed Shire Council, aiming to improve flood resilience, fish habitat, and waterway health.<\/p>\n

Tweed Landcare coordinator Amalia Pahlow said the restoration site was established almost a decade ago.<\/p>\n

“The community planted it as part of National Tree Day in 2015,” Pahlow said.<\/p>\n

“These plants have survived two major floods and grown into a forest but have been impacted by environmental weeds, including balloon vine, and the site requires additional planting to fill in some gaps.”<\/p>\n

Planting will include a range of local native riparian plants, such as Lomandra, Creek Sandpaper fig, Watergum, and Blue quandong, which thrive along riverbanks.<\/p>\n

“Tweed Landcare would like to have a Landcare group in every village or town, and in Uki, we have partnered with the council to set up a new group, Uki RiverCare, to look after this site,” Pahlow said.<\/p>\n

Monthly workdays run on the fourth Sunday of each month from 8.30 am and typically involve planting, watering, weeding, mulching, and morning tea. No experience is needed.<\/p>\n

Community members are invited to join in at Kyogle Road (opposite Meadow Place) on Sunday from 8.30 am to 11 am.<\/p>\n
