{"id":108057,"date":"2025-06-28T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=108057"},"modified":"2025-06-25T20:50:41","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T10:50:41","slug":"parade-shines-light-on-resilience-and-community-spirit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/parade-shines-light-on-resilience-and-community-spirit\/","title":{"rendered":"Parade shines light on resilience and community spirit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THOUSANDS of people lined the streets as the annual Lismore Lantern Parade shone a light on resilience and ongoing community spirit in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The event has run for more than 30 years and is organised by a core group of volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>It is part of the Winter Solstice festival, with a focus on community, resilience and renewal through a night-time procession in the CBD.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd was treated to an array of giant illuminated puppets, lantern floats, live drumming, dancing and street theatre.<\/p>\n<p>This year, more than 2000 people carried lanterns in the parade with support from schools and community groups.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113133\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113133\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113133\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/06\/508857468_1178168551_23220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"418\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113133\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Community groups and volunteers were a major part of the parade this year. Photo: SUPPLIED.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The fiery finale was based on the Return of the Sun, a nod to the Chinese Year of the Snake, and drew thousands of people inside Oakes Oval.<\/p>\n<p>Event organiser Jyllie Jackson made a memorial lantern paying tribute to people who have been instrumental in the event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The theme is a call to return to kindness, compassion and to the deep care which makes Lismore so special,&#8221; Ms Jackson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After challenging times it&#8217;s the light in each of us and that we share with one another that brings our community back to life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113134\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113134\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-113134\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/06\/511147628_1023254045_25331.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113134\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The parade featured lanterns and giant illuminated figures which were marched across the streets of the CBD. Photo: SUPPLIED.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The parade showcased the dedication of volunteers, with everything from a specially designed SES tinnie to Jedi and Stormtroopers from Star Wars.<\/p>\n<p>Lismore MP Janelle Saffin said the event is a reminder of the hard work and community spirit shown since the devastating floods in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an emotional night given all the things that have happened in Lismore over the last few years,&#8221; Ms Saffin said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I saw the lantern parade when it started 31 years ago and it&#8217;s just grown from strength to strength.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THOUSANDS of people lined the streets as the annual Lismore Lantern Parade shone a light on resilience and ongoing community spirit in the region.
