NORTH Coast households and small businesses are now eligible for discounts on battery systems under a new $2.3 billion Federal Government scheme.<\/p>\n
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which began on July 1, aims to reduce the upfront cost of installing a small-scale battery by about 30 per cent. That equates to roughly $4000 on a typical system.<\/p>\n
Local MP Justine Elliot said the program would offer cost-of-living support across the region.<\/p>\n
“As your local Labor MP I’m proud to be delivering the Albanese Labor Government’s Cheaper Home Battery Program which will help reduce electricity bills,” she said.<\/p>\n
“North Coast households with existing rooftop solar could save up to $1,100 off their power bill every year, and a household installing a new solar and a battery system could save up to $2,300 a year \u2013 up to 90 per cent of a typical family electricity bill.”<\/p>\n
Small businesses and community organisations can also apply, with support available for battery systems between 5 kWh and 100 kWh.<\/p>\n
The Clean Energy Regulator is managing the rollout under the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. The program is funded by the Federal Government.<\/p>\n
Despite high uptake of rooftop solar, battery installation remains limited. Fewer than three per cent of Australian households currently use battery systems.<\/p>\n
The government expects more than one million additional batteries will be installed by 2030.<\/p>\n
