{"id":108302,"date":"2025-07-07T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-06T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=108302"},"modified":"2025-07-02T22:37:48","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T12:37:48","slug":"service-to-acknowledge-soldiers-efforts-in-the-middle-east","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/service-to-acknowledge-soldiers-efforts-in-the-middle-east\/","title":{"rendered":"Service to acknowledge soldiers&#8217; efforts in the Middle East"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Ballina RSL Sub Branch is hosting a Middle East Area of Operations commemoration service, recognising Australian Defence Force personnel and staff from the Northern Rivers who served between 2001 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p>It is the second time the sunset service has been held with a dinner and light entertainment for veterans and their families to follow at the club.<\/p>\n<p>The community are invited to attend the memorial site across from the club at 5pm on Friday, July 11.<\/p>\n<p>Ballina RSL Sub Branch president Jamie Tanner said it is a welcome addition to the calendar.<\/p>\n<p>The 42-year-old served in the Australian Army for 11 years, with overseas tours in East Timor, Afghanistan and Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I really like the fact that we&#8217;re commemorating with events for the veterans that are still here,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We certainly don&#8217;t forget the past, but focusing on what we currently have and acknowledging them is a big thing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It took a long time for our Vietnam Veterans to be recognised after the war.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it wasn&#8217;t for them, the entitlements and acknowledgement that my cohorts get from this modern day wouldn&#8217;t exist.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is another way we pay tribute to them, too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The commemorative day was established in 2024 by RSL NSW<\/p>\n<p>The day marks the withdrawal of Australian troops from Afghanistan on July 11, 2021, and recognises the service and sacrifice of those who served in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a lot more of them around here than you think,&#8221; Mr Tanner said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not going to reinvent the wheel, it&#8217;s just a chance to further acknowledge and have these guys share their experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Bookings for the dinner are encouraged and can be made by phoning the Sub Branch office on 6686 0133.<\/p>\n<p>You can also email them on <a href=\"mailto:BallinaSB@rslnsw.org.au\">BallinaSB@rslnsw.org.au<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Ballina RSL Sub Branch is hosting a Middle East Area of Operations commemoration service, recognising Australian Defence Force personnel and staff from the Northern Rivers who served between 2001 and 2021.
