A NEW access ramp and a series of upgrades have been completed at Lighthouse Beach to improve access for people with disability and emergency services.<\/p>\n
The $400,00 project included the construction of a concrete ramp with stainless steel handrails, a tactile surface, and an extension of the existing emergency vehicle access ramp.<\/p>\n
Other works included a new concrete block retaining wall and stairs leading to the relocated\u00a0beach showers.<\/p>\n
Ballina Shire Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the project had been a long-term goal for council and was an important step in making the coastline more accessible.<\/p>\n
“It provides safer access for everyone and improves emergency access for our local services,” she said.<\/p>\n
“It’s about making sure everyone, regardless of age or ability, can experience and enjoy our beautiful beaches.”<\/p>\n
The project received joint funding from the state and federal Community Assets Program under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.<\/p>\n
The funding supports the recovery of local infrastructure damaged during the floods in February and June 2022.<\/p>\n
Richmond MP Justine Elliot said the upgrades showed the government’s commitment to building resilient community infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said the work would have a lasting impact.<\/p>\n
“This project is about more than access. It’s about restoring community infrastructure that was damaged by severe weather and making it stronger and more inclusive for the future,” she said.<\/p>\n
