{"id":108635,"date":"2025-07-22T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=108635"},"modified":"2025-07-16T20:36:50","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T10:36:50","slug":"nurse-wins-two-major-awards-as-student-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/nurse-wins-two-major-awards-as-student-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Nurse wins two major awards as student of the year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LISMORE nurse Alex Synott has received two major awards after being named TAFE NSW Student of the Year and Wellbeing and Human Services student of the year.<\/p>\n<p>He was recognised during an online award ceremony at the 2025 TAFE NSW Student Excellence Awards.<\/p>\n<p>The former kitchen hand works at Lismore Base Hospital and said he overcame a number of hurdles during his time studying.<\/p>\n<p>Since December, he has been working in the new graduate program at the Oncology and Hematology ward.<\/p>\n<p>He started at TAFE in 2018 and went on to further study which saw him earn a statement of attainment in Medical Administration and Medication Assistance, before earning his diploma of nursing last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t be where I am without the support of my teachers,&#8221; Alex said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I was struggling, I felt comfortable to put up my hand and ask for help. From day one, I felt like my teachers had my back and wanted me to succeed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/07\/TAFENSWDiplomaofNurs_30493.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"739\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alex Synott has enjoyed his time working in the Oncology and Hematology ward at Lismore Base Hospital. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was able to really focus on where I needed to strengthen my skills, and I was never left behind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said working as a kitchen hand for nearly 10 years shaped his resilience and work ethic as he considered new career options.<\/p>\n<p>He initially went through a media and technology course before switching to health care.<\/p>\n<p>Diploma of Nursing teacher Mel Ramsay nominated him for the awards and said he was a standout student at the Ballina campus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Alex&#8217;s journey is a powerful example of what determination and support can achieve,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He consistently sought feedback, deepened his understanding of nursing concepts, and showed a genuine passion for helping others.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been incredible to watch him grow into a confident, capable student nurse.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LISMORE nurse Alex Synott has received two major awards after being named TAFE NSW Student of the Year and Wellbeing and Human Services student of the year.
