NORTHERN RIVERS dad Brad Ambridge has been named as a finalist in The Fathering Project’s 2025 Australian Fathering Awards.<\/p>\n

The founder of the inclusive soccer program Rainbow Roos, Ambridge, understands more than most the challenges and barriers faced by neurodiverse children.<\/p>\n

Together with his wife, Jess, and their football-mad seven-year-old son, Grayson, who has autism, he has a unique perspective.<\/p>\n

Inspired by Grayson, Ambridge now provides fun and adaptable soccer skills programs for children with additional needs.<\/p>\n

In addition to soccer skills, he teaches awareness, empathy and kindness, encouraging each child to be themselves while being part of a team.<\/p>\n

The award nomination is the culmination of a rollercoaster ride since launching the Rainbow Roos, which now runs 20 weekly sessions and school holiday programs across the region.<\/p>\n

“It really snowballed and has grown so much since we began,” he said.<\/p>\n

“They’re taught sport and life skills in a way that isn’t obvious, and as far as they’re concerned, they’re just kicking a ball around with some new mates.”<\/p>\n

Ambridge is one of three fathers nominated who have demonstrated support, guidance, and love to their child or other children through their working role or family life.<\/p>\n

“It’s been kindness and things like teamwork where we’ve been unique,” he said of the Roos’ evolution.<\/p>\n

“With a mix of those who are neurodiverse and those there for a bit of fun, everyone learns that everyone’s different, and that we need to help each other.<\/p>\n

“If nothing comes out of this other than children who are aware of their surroundings and understand human kindness, then I’ve done my job, and soccer is the facilitator.<\/p>\n

“I’m not trying to find the next Beckham or Messi, I’m trying to find the next group of humans who are kind and will take the gauntlet forward.”<\/p>\n

Winners are announced on September 4.<\/p>\n
