CENTRAL Tweed Heads is set to undergo a makeover after Tweed Shire Council successfully bid for a $1.5 million grant from the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.<\/p>\n
The Border Bleak to Border Beautiful project aims to rejuvenate the CBD, with a focus on Wharf Street, Bay Street and Jack Evans Boat Harbour.<\/p>\n
It will include streetscape and infrastructure work, as well as wayfinding, traffic and safety signage.<\/p>\n
The former border tourism visitor information centre will be repurposed to create a new commercial space, and large scale wall murals and seasonal signage and banners will be introduced.<\/p>\n
The council contributed $400,000 to the project as part of the Regional Economic Development and Community Investment Program announced by Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty and Minister for Recovery, Small Business and the North Coast Janelle Saffin.<\/p>\n
Council general manager Troy Green said the timing for the initiative was perfect.<\/p>\n
“Ahead of preparations for the Brisbane Olympics 2032 and the $900 million Tweed Mall development, it’s a great example of right time, right place,” he said.<\/p>\n
“This revitalisation will boost community infrastructure, enhance safety and spread colour and vibrancy to celebrate the NSW gateway.” Green also acknowledged the role Tweed Heads Business Chamber chair Colin Usher and the organisation’s members played in securing the grant.<\/p>\n
