{"id":109168,"date":"2025-08-13T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=109168"},"modified":"2025-08-06T20:27:48","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T10:27:48","slug":"pickleball-tournament-a-smash-hit-for-regional-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/sport\/pickleball-tournament-a-smash-hit-for-regional-club\/","title":{"rendered":"Pickleball tournament a smash hit for regional club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A RECORD number of entries turned out for one of the biggest pickleball tournaments on the calendar when Ballina hosted the Northern Rivers Regional Rally.<\/p>\n<p>Around 250 competitors took part in the three-day event at Ballina Indoor Sports Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Several competitors came from the Northern Rivers Pickleball Club, while others travelled from south-east Queensland and Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>There was a live stream this year with singles, doubles and mixed doubles events being held.<\/p>\n<p>Julie Brodie and Fran Kealey travelled from Ocean Grove in Victoria to play doubles together.<\/p>\n<p>Both women have competed in tournaments across NSW and Queensland in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>They were impressed with the facility and standard of competition in the region.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_114989\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114989\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-114989\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/08\/IMG_1274_76797.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-114989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peter Regan and John Fleming from the Northern Rivers Pickleball Club playing at Ballina Indoor Sports Centre. Photos: MITCHELL CRAIG<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m on the committee with Pickleball Australia and I follow a lot of the clubs on social media,&#8221; Kealey said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These guys here are impressive. It&#8217;s great to see a club with eight courts in a friendly community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sport is just powering along wherever we seem to go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Northern Rivers Pickleball Club has more than 300 members with many now playing in state competitions and masters events.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This tournament highlights the incredible momentum behind pickleball growth worldwide, including in regional Australia,&#8221; club president Steve Bergan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not just about competition, it&#8217;s about connection, inclusion and having a great time together.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A RECORD number of entries turned out for one of the biggest pickleball tournaments on the calendar when Ballina hosted the Northern Rivers Regional Rally.
