THE villages of Tyalgum and Urbenville have strengthened visitor capacity following two NSW Government-funded infrastructure improvement projects.<\/p>\n
A $39,216 grant has funded the construction of a new canteen and shelter at the showground in Urbenville.<\/p>\n
Managers previously relied on hired tents for events, which reduced the viability of the showground.<\/p>\n
The upgrade has enhanced events such as the Urbenville Camp draft and Bull Ride, with the number of visitors nearly doubling the town\u2019s population of just over 330 residents.<\/p>\n
The Reserve Land Manager raised additional funds for a shelter, BBQs, tables and bin enclosures.<\/p>\n
Urbenville Reserve Land Manager secretary and treasurer Diana Payne said the funding had been a significant boost to the community, which relied heavily on tourism for its survival.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe new building has enabled us to have events so we can fundraise and showcase our gorgeous mountains, farmland and forests to campers and tourists,\u201d Payne said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really brought us together and helped turn things around.\u201d<\/p>\n
In Tyalgum, 10 new all-weather camping and caravan sites have now opened following a $65,450 grant.<\/p>\n
One of the state\u2019s wetter regions, the district receives more than 1,150 mm of rain annually, and the campgrounds have struggled with heavy rain, often forcing partial closures.<\/p>\n
The government grant and additional locally raised funds have transformed the campground into a year-round, accessible destination, featuring new stormwater drainage pits and plumbing, six new electrical meter boxes with multiple power outlets, new taps, and a gravel ring road connecting the sites.<\/p>\n
Tyalgum Public Recreation Reserve chair, Mic Julien, said the grant had made a significant difference to the campground and the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cPreviously, caretakers would have to decline a third of bookings during the peak holiday period,\u201d Julien said.<\/p>\n
