{"id":109894,"date":"2025-09-17T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=109894"},"modified":"2025-09-24T10:13:00","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T00:13:00","slug":"funk-friendship-and-a-whole-lot-of-soul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/living\/funk-friendship-and-a-whole-lot-of-soul\/","title":{"rendered":"Funk, friendship and a whole lot of soul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AS a musician gigging several nights a week, it can be tough to find time to catch up with friends \u2014 especially when many of them are fellow musos in the same boat.<\/p>\n<p>To solve this, Hayley Grace came up with a simple but brilliant idea: get a bunch of her musical mates together to form a band, giving them all an excuse to hang out more often.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past eight years, around 30 different musicians have performed with the group The Bay Collective, whose sound blends funk, reggae and soul.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everything happens so organically,&#8221; Grace said. &#8220;It&#8217;s always been so easy to get shows together because everyone is so stoked to be a part of the project.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/09\/HayleyGraceandtheBay_41230.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"367\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hayley Grace and the Bay Collective. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The current line-up features Elena Marcigot, who plays everything from classical to Latin music; Chelsea McNelliey from reggae-dub band Skyeater; Hussy Hicks bassist Tracy Stephens; and drummer Beck Flatt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Beck busks with her dog playing folk music but she&#8217;s also this monster drummer that&#8217;s insane,&#8221; Grace said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Depending who&#8217;s on stage the songs can have different flavours.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a couple of men in our ranks at the moment but we do as possible try to create a platform for women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Grace writes the songs for the band, and said her lyrics tend to reflect whatever is going on in her life at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Funky Mamma, for instance, explores the balancing act between living the rock star lifestyle and being a mum.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having a daughter look up to me is a big responsibility so I&#8217;m trying to express myself in a way that teaches her it&#8217;s OK to express yourself,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/09\/TheBayCollective.Pho_42383.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"660\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bay Collective in action.
