{"id":109987,"date":"2025-09-15T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=109987"},"modified":"2025-09-11T11:25:56","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T01:25:56","slug":"youth-voice-to-be-heard-in-national-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/youth-voice-to-be-heard-in-national-parliament\/","title":{"rendered":"Youth voice to be heard in national parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>YOUNG people aged 16 and 17 are being encouraged to apply for a new national program offering a rare chance to experience Australia&#8217;s parliamentary system up close.<\/p>\n<p>Expressions of interest are now open for the inaugural National Youth Parliament, which will bring together 150 participants from across the country in Canberra in August 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The five-day, four-night program will include mock debates, policy workshops and mentoring sessions with political leaders, all held at Parliament House and the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House.<\/p>\n<p>Richmond MP Justine Elliot said the fully funded program would give students the chance to represent their community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This program will show young people how their voice can make a difference,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No prior political experience is required \u2013 just curiosity, commitment, and a desire to learn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I encourage any young person in the electorate of Richmond who will be 16 or 17 in August 2026 to submit an expression of interest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More information is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/nyp.houseofrepresentatives.gov.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nyp.houseofrepresentatives.gov.au<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>YOUNG people aged 16 and 17 are being encouraged to apply for a new national program offering a rare chance to experience Australia&#8217;s parliamentary system up close.
