GRAB your hair crimper and dig out those fluoro legwarmers \u2013 Byron Community Market is rewinding the clock to the 1980s for a special themed event this Sunday October 5.<\/p>\n

The ‘Born in the ’80s’ beachside market will feature everything from a retro dance workshop with local troupe The Cassettes to live performances by flamboyant duo The Versace Boys, DJ Lainie Godiva and family band ObiSun.<\/p>\n

Attendees are encouraged to dress up for the occasion, which celebrates the year 1987, when Byron Community Centre took over the management of the markets. The event is part of the organisation’s 130-year anniversary celebrations.<\/p>\n

Prizes such as coffee vouchers and Byron Theatre tickets will be awarded on the day for standout ’80s-inspired outfits.<\/p>\n

“The ’80s had so many different facets,” Byron Community Market coordinator Natwah Petruszka said. “You have glam rock, fluoro, pastels, rah-rah skirts, leg warmers, so there’s lots of inspiration amongst it all.<\/p>\n

“All of our vintage and second-hand clothing stalls have been asked to bring special ’80s garb so if people come along and don’t have a costume they can buy one.”<\/p>\n

Petruszka, who is also a member of The Cassettes, will take part in the group’s ’80s dance workshop at 10am.<\/p>\n

“There’s lots of hip thrusts and leg kicks, body rolls and jazz hands,” she said.<\/p>\n

Byron Markets has long been a supporter of local musicians, with three stages set to showcase a variety of homegrown talent throughout the day.<\/p>\n

“As well as being an incredible crowd pleaser, The Versace Boys are known for their costume changes and all-round good vibes,” Petruszka said. “We love having them at the market at any time, but they’re dedicating this set to the ’80s.<\/p>\n

“The first time I came across Lainie was when she was DJing The Cassettes’ 12-year celebration, and she just busts out the grooves. She has song after song of classic ’80s rock and pop.<\/p>\n

“We’re really excited and really encourage people to come down and join in the fun.”<\/p>\n

Byron Markets’ ‘Born in the ’80s’ celebration takes place at Main Beach this Sunday October 5 from 8am to 3pm.<\/p>\n
