BALLINA Shire Council has released its Draft Local Strategic Planning Statement for community feedback, outlining plans to address housing supply issues and rapid population growth.<\/p>\n

The report shows Ballina Shire is one of the fastest-growing areas in regional NSW, with an estimated annual growth rate of 1.21 per cent.<\/p>\n

Around 275 new dwellings will need to be built each year over the next 20 years to meet anticipated population growth.<\/p>\n

Ballina also has an ageing population, with 36 per cent of residents expected to be over the age of 65 by 2046.<\/p>\n

Council’s director of planning and environmental health, Matthew Wood, said it would require different forms of housing, including smaller homes and greater density in areas close to shops, services and existing amenities.<\/p>\n

“The plan reflects community priorities to protect the environment, retain lifestyle qualities and deliver key infrastructure.<\/p>\n

“It’s time for a refresh of our principal strategic planning document and to check in with the community on a range of existing strategies.<\/p>\n

“We want to make sure we are heading in a direction aligned with the characteristics of our area and the community’s priorities for Ballina’s future.”<\/p>\n

Council also aims to attract workers by ensuring employment opportunities and housing are available.<\/p>\n

Floods, COVID-19 and ongoing housing challenges have emerged since the first draft was released in 2020.<\/p>\n

The updated plan includes a range of supporting materials, including maps, frequently asked questions and a summary document available on council’s YourSay website.<\/p>\n

It can be viewed at yoursayballina.com.au\/local-strategic-planning-statement<\/a>, with feedback available through an online survey.<\/p>\n
