DANCER, coach and Dancing with the Stars judge for 18 seasons, Mark Wilson is returning to the region to host the 14th annual Tyalgum Dance Spectacular on November 15.<\/p>\n

The five-time Australian Ballroom Champion and New Vogue champion with wife and dance partner, Anne Marie Wilson, is a nationally respected dance coach and competition adjudicator.<\/p>\n

Born in London, Tottenham, Wilson emigrated to Australia in 1969 with his parents and two brothers as part of the assisted passage program known as 10 Pound Poms.<\/p>\n

“Dad was always saying, I want to come to Australia and then finally we got on the Fair Star, down to the bottom of the ship, and finally arrived and had the most exciting life growing up in Melbourne.<\/p>\n

“Thomastown was the edge of the rural area, and it was all running around in fields and being chased by snakes and bulls and climbing trees and massive Huntsmans and swimming in the creek naked, which you couldn’t do now, because the chemicals in there would probably peel your skin off, but they were exciting times.”<\/p>\n

Wilson’s chosen career and passion for dance were not without precedent. His father was a ballroom dancing teacher, his uncle had been a competitive dancer in England, and his mother was an Irish dancer.<\/p>\n

“I went to school in Lalor, with mostly Italians and Greeks and a few Australians, and it was tough because I didn’t fit in. I was nine, with this pommy accent, and kids wanting to punch me up; that’s just how it was,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Walking home one day, Mum had seen a dance school and asked if I wanted to try.<\/p>\n

“As soon as the music came on, the teacher taught me the modern waltz, which is just a step, side, together, and I just belonged, I could feel the flow of the music straight away.<\/p>\n

“It’s such a great way of learning how to communicate with people, and later to meet girls, which is how I met my wife.”<\/p>\n

Wilson said it was a highly athletic discipline, but the decades had seen many changes with the advent of technology.<\/p>\n

“My eldest son is the current Australian Professional Ballroom champion, and these dancers are incredibly fit, but that skill itself is being lost,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The industry has morphed into a lot more solo competition. In China a few years ago, there were nine heats of 25 girls dancing in the solo cha-cha.<\/p>\n

“It’s easier to dance on your own than to have to learn the skills of working with someone else, and that’s a reflection on society now.<\/p>\n

Returning to host the event for the 12th time, Wilson said presenting the show was a highlight every year.<\/p>\n

“There’s a real family connection because the organiser’s parents, Doug and Sue, who are the most beautiful people, taught my wife and me at an elite level,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s a beautiful old-world hall, and it’s decorated so beautifully, and you have the three best dance partnerships in Australia, as well as an amazing opera singer, and I’m fortunate to get the opportunity to host it.”<\/p>\n
