BALLINA Shire Council has extended nominations for its Australia Day Awards in hopes of attracting a wide range of people from across the region who deserve recognition.<\/p>\n

Nominations are open until Friday, November 7, with people encouraged to nominate volunteers and others who have made a difference to the community over the past 12 months.<\/p>\n

It can be young leaders at schools, artists and environmental champions who have contributed locally and further afield.<\/p>\n

Previous winners of the Citizen of the Year award include SES members and volunteers who have worked with refugee groups.<\/p>\n

Ballina mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the awards recognise the spirit and generosity that strengthen the community.<\/p>\n

“What stands out about our nominees is not only what they achieve, but the way they lift others up and inspire positive change,” she said.<\/p>\n

“These awards celebrate both remarkable individuals and groups whose ongoing commitment helps shape a stronger, more connected community.<\/p>\n

“Each of them leaves a lasting mark, and these awards give us an opportunity to celebrate that.”<\/p>\n

Last year there were more than 40 nominations across the eight categories of Local Hero, Young Citizen, Senior Citizen, Volunteer of the Year, Sports Achievement, Arts and Culture, Environmental and Community Event of the Year.<\/p>\n

The 2026 Ballina Shire Citizen of the Year will be chosen from all nominees across all categories.<\/p>\n
