{"id":111490,"date":"2025-11-14T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=111490"},"modified":"2025-11-12T20:39:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T09:39:07","slug":"communities-pause-to-remember","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/news\/communities-pause-to-remember\/","title":{"rendered":"Communities pause to remember"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NORTHERN Rivers communities marked Remembrance Day with a minute&#8217;s silence on Sunday, honouring the sacrifices of Australians who have served in conflicts past and present.<\/p>\n<p>Far North Coast Legacy president Narelle Scott delivered the commemorative address at the Ballina RSL sub-branch service at Memorial Park.<\/p>\n<p>She reflected on her deployment to Afghanistan and her ongoing work supporting veterans and families.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Scott spent 26 years between 1989 and 2015 with the Department of Defence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/11\/RemberancedaybalTNGs_86633.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Veterans and community volunteers were part of the service at Ballina. Photo: EVANNA KELLY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 with Ballina RSL sub-branch president Jamie Tanner.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I worked in finance and payroll, we spent 10 months in Afghanistan, which was one of the longest deployments,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We always go where the troops go. It didn&#8217;t keep us out of danger, people had been killed there in the area we were in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, a lot of veterans from around our deployment don&#8217;t get involved in a lot of this stuff and it takes them a long time to come to terms with some of the things that happened.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Scott said being part of Legacy has helped her provide social support and connection while assisting more children.<\/p>\n<p>During her address she reflected on the past and her hopes for the future as school leaders from around the region laid wreaths at the cenotaph.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our democracy and way of life are not guaranteed, they are a result of ordinary Australians who answered the call of duty in extraordinary times,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The lessons of history must never be forgotten, Remembrance Day teaches us about unity and empathy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It encourages us to reflect on the consequences of conflict and the importance of reconciliation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/11\/578277327_1269038521_88332.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A wreath from the main service at Lismore.
