BYRON Bay firefighters will take on a gruelling lighthouse relay this weekend, lapping Cape Byron Lighthouse in more than 18 kilograms of protective gear as part of a Movember fundraiser.<\/p>\n
Fourteen firefighters from Byron Bay Fire and Rescue NSW will take turns to run the six-kilometre loop between the Byron Bay Surf Club and the lighthouse in pairs over the course of eight hours.<\/p>\n
This is the second year the unit has taken part in the fundraiser, which supports Movember’s work in men’s health, mental health and prostate cancer research.<\/p>\n
Deputy captain Perry Bartholomew said it was a cause close to firefighters’ hearts as studies have shown they are at higher risk for prostate cancer due to exposure to hazardous materials on the job.<\/p>\n
“One of our crew members has had an encounter with prostate cancer and our captain’s father had it as well,” he said.<\/p>\n
The challenge will run alongside a community fun day at the surf club, featuring fire truck tours, a simulated kitchen fire, fire hose demonstrations, a sausage sizzle and a visit from Fire and Rescue NSW mascot Bernie Cinders.<\/p>\n
“We like to engage with the community so they know who we are and what we’re doing,” Bartholomew said.<\/p>\n
Founded in 2003, Movember encourages participants to grow moustaches as a conversation starter around these issues.<\/p>\n
Supporters can also take on physical challenges, such as walking or running 60 kilometres throughout November in recognition of the 60 men lost to suicide globally every hour, or create their own fundraising events.<\/p>\n
The Byron Bay lighthouse relay and fun day will run from 6am to 2pm on Saturday, 22 November.<\/p>\n
