{"id":112069,"date":"2025-12-07T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/?p=112069"},"modified":"2025-12-03T20:17:48","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T09:17:48","slug":"rising-tweed-star-hopes-to-represent-australia-in-lawn-bowls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/tweedcoasttimes\/sport\/rising-tweed-star-hopes-to-represent-australia-in-lawn-bowls\/","title":{"rendered":"Rising Tweed star hopes to represent Australia in lawn bowls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TWEED bowling sensation Lilly Vardy has her sights set on representing Australia and competing at the Commonwealth Games as she continues to make a name for herself in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>The 17-year-old has won back-to-back singles titles at Queensland&#8217;s under-18 level and has just represented the state in open competition for the first time at the Australian Sides Championships in Tasmania.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after she won silver medals in pairs and fours with the Queensland state junior team.<\/p>\n<p>She was one of 12 players in the Queensland open team which featured Australian Jackaroos veteran Kelsey Cottrell.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/12\/LillyU18girlssingles_50177.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lilly Vardy hopes to win a third straight Queensland singles under-18s title next year. I enjoy being around high-level bowlers and seeing how they play the game,&#8221; Lilly said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My main goal is to play for Australia and get to the Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They have development programs for juniors to work their way up to the Jackaroos and I just want to be around that and learn as much as I can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lilly had a keen interest in lawn bowls from when she first played the game during school sport when she was 10.<\/p>\n<p>Her grandfather had played the game, and she soon found her way to Club Tweed where she has<\/p>\n<p>been under the guidance of coach Max Jaffray.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/12\/583283051_8751735520_52450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lilly won silver medals in pairs and fours with the Queensland state junior team recently.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She won her first Tweed junior singles title at the club in 2022 and has been one of its top stars over the past three years.<\/p>\n<p>Her family has helped take her to tournaments around the country while training three times a week.<\/p>\n<p>She hopes to win a third straight Queensland under-18 title next year, which would be a rare achievement at junior level.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great to look back and see what I&#8217;ve done in a pretty short amount of time,&#8221; Lilly said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Club Tweed is so supportive and the members there are always interested in how I&#8217;m going.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m actually really lucky to have that support and I just want to put everything I can into it.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TWEED bowling sensation Lilly Vardy has her sights set on representing Australia and competing at the Commonwealth Games as she continues to make a name for herself in the sport.
