LOCAL author Nadya Radonich has released her debut novel, The Elephant Whisperer’s Daughter, a sweeping coming-of-age tale set against the turbulence of post-war change and told in the depths of the Burmese jungle.<\/p>\n

The tender and evocative tale is one of resilience, friendship and the enduring strength of love across cultures, generations and continents.<\/p>\n

Born in the chaos of WWII in London, Margaret ‘Maggie’ Jones enters the world amidst fire and falling bombs.<\/p>\n

When her father, a passionate conservationist, takes the family from post-war London to the wild heart of Burma (now Myanmar), she finds herself immersed in a landscape of wonder and danger.<\/p>\n

But paradise is fragile, and as political unrest and family tensions mount, Maggie must navigate a world unravelling at the seams that will test her courage and shape her destiny.<\/p>\n

The Nunderi-based writer, now 33, grew up in Murwillumbah but lived in Indonesia, Thailand and India as a child, which informed her protagonist.<\/p>\n

“I didn’t plan it; the story of Maggie and her nature conservationist father just came to me,” Radonich said.<\/p>\n

“I travelled a lot when I was younger, but I’m not quite sure where the exact inspiration came from.<\/p>\n

“She’s quite different to me. Maggie is very brave. She was born during the Blitz, so she got to be fearless, and I am not really very brave.<\/p>\n

“But we’re of similar backgrounds, and both growing up as the only child. My experiences as a child in different countries and how I felt during those times gave me a way of looking through her eyes.”<\/p>\n

In a feat the envy of most writers, the story came to Radonich in an intense writing blitz over a short period.<\/p>\n

“I started writing it a bit before ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred hit, and then while that was all happening, I was writing on an 18th-century writing slope while the power was off, which was fun,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I finished the first draft around a week after the cyclone ended.<\/p>\n

“I’m not religious or anything, but I am spiritual, and it was honestly like being moved by something bigger than myself.<\/p>\n

“It was just pouring out of me. I’ve never had that before; it was incredible. I had so much fun writing it.”<\/p>\n

Radonich will conduct a reading and book signings at her Citadel launch, featuring live music by Jenny McGregor.<\/p>\n

“The book is a love letter to wild places and the people who find themselves in them,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It’s about the moment we realise that courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s the decision to keep listening to the world’s whispers, even when they break our hearts.”<\/p>\n

The Elephant Whisperer’s Daughter is available through Bowerbird Publishing and all good book retailers.<\/p>\n
