DURING the COVID-19 pandemic, Maia Willow found herself feeling disheartened by the steady stream of negative news surrounding aged care homes, whose residents were bearing the brunt of the virus.<\/p>\n

It was then that the aged care nurse made a promise to herself to help change the narrative around the sector \u2014 to highlight the joy, wisdom and connections that flourish when people engage with seniors and their stories.<\/p>\n

With this commitment in mind, the Billinudgel local founded the not-for-profit organisation Our Timeless Threads in 2024. The group offers shopping experiences in aged care homes across the Northern Rivers region, where residents can model pre-loved clothing she sells and even help create their own pieces.<\/p>\n

“We also bring along a polaroid camera and red carpet runways to showcase clothes,” Willow said.<\/p>\n

“It has been a lot of work, but extremely worth it when I witness the joy and life it brings to seniors. Stepping back from a purely clinical focus to nurture the overall needs of residents feels genuinely aligned with the nurse I aspire to be. We are more than our diagnoses \u2014 when we focus on joy, creativity and connection, our inner child shines through.”<\/p>\n

Our Timeless Threads won the Peace, Love & Mungbeans: Outstanding Community Organisation at the 2025 Uniquely Byron Business Awards.<\/p>\n

Willow has also opened a community hub, The OTT Shop, on Acacia St in Byron Bay, where she sells second hand clothing and runs workshops and creative planning sessions.<\/p>\n

“We also host aged care tea parties, so residents have somewhere in the community to stop, sip and shop on their community bus trips,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Our vision for 2026 is to implement programs that will support intergenerational connection, skill sharing and storytelling. Something our society is lacking is a third space, and I hope our hearty little shop can create a feeling of belonging for our community.”<\/p>\n

Willow believes an admission into aged care is a crucial moment \u2014 a time for nurses to reconnect seniors with their essence and identity.<\/p>\n

“A diagnosis or sudden life change can overshadow their stories,” she said. “I’ve seen the power of music and fashion to awaken those memories. For instance, when I had to wear my Doc Martens to work after finally wearing out my Skechers, a resident recalled fond moments associated with the shoes. It sparked a meaningful conversation around fashion and music that allowed me to incorporate his favourite music into his care plan, enhancing his connection to happier times while I was providing end of life care.”<\/p>\n

Willow also regularly attends Connecting Generations Bangalow events, which link young families with older members of the community, offering kids the chance to dress up and get their photos taken.<\/p>\n

In 2026 she plans to launch an adaptive clothing line alongside her dignified clothing protectors \u2014 pieces designed to guard clothing from spills while remaining stylish.<\/p>\n
